In the Classroom
After reading a short folktale from Liberia or another country on the site, have students complete a 5-minute sketch of one scene using inspiration from Phillip Martin's clip art style. They can share their sketches in pairs and explain why they chose that moment. Let students select one of the included folktale play scripts (or adapt a story themselves) and perform it as a short reader's theater. They can design simple props or background art inspired by Martin's clip art. Display a world map and have students place markers on the countries where the folktales originate (e.g., Liberia, China, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil). In the Classroom
In a personal economy lesson, use this site to help students "plan a trip" to Paris. Assign students to cooperative learning groups, with each group receiving a hypothetical amount of money, and directions to find lodging, food, transportation while surveying the sites of Paris. This is a great way to teach students how to budget with real world prices and figures. For an emphasis on French history, require students to participate in certain tourist activities in their hypothetical situation - simultaneously creating challenges to their budgets. This is certainly a nice way to introduce French geography and culture. The site incluea a section for kids and a quiz. Note: to read in French, click the French flag.
Some of the interactive tour portions require a special Active X plug-in. When prompted, you will need to install these.

Use this middle-grades environmental science unit to help students investigate where lead comes from, how people are exposed, why children are especially vulnerable, and how prevention, public policy, and environmental justice connect to the issue. Designed for grades 5-8, the unit combines background information with a pre/post test, five lesson plans, research, discussion, writing, debate, field experiences, student and teacher reading lists, and additional resources. Students examine sources of lead in homes, air, soil, food, water, paint, gasoline, and batteries, then move into lead toxicity, regulations, community action, and environmental equity. Several activities are ready to adapt, including source-identification group work, a community contamination debate, environmental justice research, and a field trip or guest-speaker experience. Because the curriculum was written in 1997, teachers should verify current medical guidance, lead regulations, exposure recommendations, and statistics before using it in the classroom.

Incorporate these lesson plans and more with any of your environmental studies. Have students complete a graphic organizer as a pre- and post-assessment on what they know about lead and lead contamination. A KWL chart works well. Replace paper graphic organizers with online, interactive graphic organizers at Holt Graphic Organizers, reviewed here. As you work through the unit, ask students to write about how to apply the ideas in this curricular unit on the environment and health to their own home lives. Exchange paper journal with a blog tool like Site123, reviewed here. Use the images from this site to contribute to a class visual discovery based on the economic situation of China. Most of the images are representative of the free markets thriving in major cities, making it easy to compare and contrast with what students have seen in the US. Select 3-5 of the more stimulating images, placing them in a powerpoint presentation. Show students the slides via interactive whiteboard/projector, with students writing down what they can observe & infer about each image. After the display is complete, have a class discussion based on student findings. Compare the reports on economic and social freedoms to those found elsewhere detailing those same rights today. Over the interactive whiteboard,use an online tool such as the 2 and 3 Circle Interactive Venn Diagrams, reviewed here, to compare and contrast the two environments. On this page you'll find loads of resources and treats (printable posters, music etc.) for teachers, librarians, storytellers, children's writers, parents, and young people -- all from award-winning children's author Aaron Shepard. His specialty is retold folktales. You'll also find information on Aaron, his books, and his author visits.
