There are many uses for this practical online tool. Get out your interactive whiteboard or projection screen (or even the classroom desktop computer) and make sure the speakers are turned up. Use this tool for students to practice speeches, or to limit time for a quiz or spelling test. Shrink the stopwatch window in the corner of your interactive whiteboard as you time different teams completing a drag-and-drop challenge. The countdown feature could also be used for timing the rotations from center to center. You can even use the timer for reading fluency exercises or physical education warm-ups! A clever classroom management tool would be to start the visible count-down on your computer screen when you want the class to settle down for directions or to transition to the next subject. Kindergarten students can practice counting along with the watch!Comments

Use the "random" button to generate a word of the day in an instant! Create pre-made word lists for students to access online from your teacher web page by entering them all , separated by commas, and clicking "Link to this page" at the end of the page. The URL that then shows in the address bar IS the URL to access that word list any time from any computer. Have students make personal lists of their own for individualized vocab study. Open Ninjawords as students read a selection in class--even in science or social studies texts, and allow students to take turns entering new words they encounter. If you have a projector or interactive whiteboard, the entire class can "see" the current "word wall" created by the history function. Or you can simply keep it on a classroom desktop to help those who need it. If you mark each "glossary" page as a Favorite on your computer, you can NAME IT "Chapter 3 Glossary" or "Amphibian Unit Glossary" etc and make it available for students to use any time. The history feature allows you to "track" whether students have entered inappropriate words. The history list seems to remain on your computer for a period of time, probably by leaving "cookies" on your computer -- in this case a useful thing! This site is a must-see for all science and STEM teachers. Be sure to bookmark the site to use for lesson plans and student interactives. Easily create and share links for students using a bookmarking tool like Symbaloo, reviewed here for younger students or Papaly, reviewed here for older students. Both sites make it easy to share a group of links in one easy-to-find page. Extend classroom technology use when working with online articles, by using Fiskkit, reviewed here, as a collaborative discussion tool. After creating a Fiskkit account, use the site's tools to share a link to any online article and highlight information to use as part of your discussion. Students then can add their own thoughts to the article, making it a shared collaboration and reflection piece. As a final project, transform classroom technology use by asking students to create explainer videos using CapCut, reviewed here to demonstrate learning of concepts. If you teach science (and even if you only TOOK science), you owe it to yourself to read through this site, at least long enough to find the topics that YOU teach and be sure that your materials are accurate. The best way to find information is probably to browse for the topics you teach and use Ctrl-F on your keyboard to FIND key terms in the text. Of course, if you believe the same misconceptions that our texts have told us for years, you won't know what terms to FIND...You might want to make this a professional learning "game" at an inservice day: find a misconception and debunk it for the rest of the elementary science team. You might want to gently point out the problems to your principal or curriculum director.Share this site with very bright students to explore and report back to you. Need a challenge for the gifted? Have the students select a misconception and create a CORRECT illustration of the concept in multimedia form. If you give them a wiki space to use for their presentation, you can even submit the link to Mr. Beaty. Now that's authentic assessment!

What a fabulous tool to use for online research about bugs. Students will love the close-up graphics. You may use images from the site that state: "Students are permitted to use images for school projects. Educators are permitted to use images for presentations given to their students." Simply click the photographer's name under a photo to read the terms that photographer specifies. The main contributor,Troy Bartlett, includes this permission. Note that such permission does NOT mean that you can use the photos on web sites or in publications. Ask your students to create a digital "bug collection" or collect bugs to show concepts such as adaptations in a PowerPoint or poster. If you have a good digital camera, contribute some class photos to the projects, too! Be sure to demonstrate how it works, then "write" a sample set of Cornell-style notes by sharing it on your interactive whiteboard so students can see how to use them! Learning support and study skills teachers will love this one. Middle school science and social studies teachers should encourage a consistent note-taking system like this so all students can find what works for them.
