What a great addition to an earth science textbook! This site offers virtual field trips that highlight geologic phenomena from around the world. Use the site's links and images to show your students examples of sediments and sedimentary rocks. Information on environmental geology, as well as additional links to related educational sites is currently not available; however, this work in progress is worth adding to your toolbox of ideas.

Add this eye-opening, interactive map to a lesson on environmental science, or weather and climate. Local and regional consequences of global climate change are illustrated through factual reports of climactic events that are divided into two groups: fingerprints (those indicating trends toward global warming) and harbingers (those directly foreshadowing climate changes). The site also includes downloadable curriculum materials for high school teachers.

tag(s): climate (95)

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered on this site! This site would also be interesting as a prompt for a class debate on the political impacts of global warming and what or if the government should do anything about it. Separate students into groups, assigning a pro and con side to the debate. Provide students with resources, this being one of them to help them tailor the arguments before they begin. What's great about this site is that it has a lot of basic definitions and current examples that would allow students to really grasp the concept and their arguments. Civics and Geography teachers will find this useful.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

From the safety of the computer lab, students can investigate some of the world's most intriguing underground realms. Lava tube, erosional and glacial, sea, and solution caves are represented with images, descriptions, and virtual tours. Learn about the physical structures that may be encountered along the way, including conulites, helictites, and stalagmites. Use the virtual cave maps to navigate through the underground rooms and click on the features you would like to learn more about. The images are spectacular, but students will have to read through the explanatory text to get the most out of the virtual tours. This would be a useful site to explore before an actual trip to a local cave.

tag(s): caves (7)

In the Classroom

Introduce Virtual Cave to your class with a projector or on a whiteboard. Once they understand how to navigate the site allow pairs to investigate on their own. Have students take digital notes on the explanatory text (including definitions for new vocabulary) using Memo Notepad, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Students should then choose one of the cave types that interests them and find out where they are located. Wrap up the study of caves by challenging student to create an interactive map using MapHub, reviewed here. With MapHub students can include display markers featuring text, photos, and videos!

Beginning with a description of the deadly heat wave that engulfed Europe in July and August of 2003, this website takes a student-friendly approach to explaining the phenomenon and effects of global warming. The interaction between water vapor, greenhouse gases, and the atmosphere is clearly explained and illustrated. Students can discover how scientists use satellite data to create and validate their climate models. Treat this resource as an on-line textbook chapter; ask students to read and summarize in their own words. The reading level is challenging, but appropriate for high ability secondary students. It will certainly make them think!

Man may have been flying for only a century, but other vertebrates have been doing it for millions of years! Take a virtual tour of the University of California's Paleontology Vertebrate Flight Exhibit. If you're just introducing the mechanics of flight, embarking on a study of natural history and prehistoric life, or looking for a new approach to an old physics lesson, this site can provide a wealth of information. Each topic of the exhibit can be explored independently or the entire site can be treated as a tutorial, with each section flowing logically to the next. The text requires a fairly high level of reading, but is brief. Links providing further explanation of key terms are found throughout the site.

"Billions and billions of years" can be a tough concept to convey, and this site does a nice job of making it understandable for secondary students. The site's interactive elements will help reinforce the content and the progression of life forms from the earliest to the present. Explore the "Teacher Start" to discover numerous resources for your classroom and lesson.

In the Classroom

Briefly introduce this activity with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to show students how to navigate the site. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to document what they are learning by taking digital notes. Use Memo Notepad; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to explore Related Activities and share what they learned with their peers using an interactive poster like Adobe Creative Cloud Express. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as Mahara.

As with anything involving water, lots of the good stuff in this site lies beneath the surface. Developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the site introduces the interplay of science, public policy, and resource management that go into managing water resources. These take the form of a collection of lessons and related background information that ask students to examine scientific facts and develop management strategies for water resources.

Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite. You will need to sign up for the free newsletter (with email) to view the photos.
