Developed as part of the National Humanities Center's Online Professional Development "Toolbox" series, this site offers history and government teachers a wonderfully succinct resource kit for building one or more lesson units. Divided into five sections: religion, predicaments, politics, expansion, and equality, the site offers introductions and a set of primary source readings for each, along with presentation guidelines and discussion suggestions. Lots of critical analysis opportunities here.

In the Classroom
This site provides both excellent discussion questions and the primary sources needed to base it on. To begin with, copy down some of the recommended topic questions on the front page of the site before opening it on an interactive whiteboard or projector. For the students, share the primary documents available by clicking on the topic, and then selecting the one in desire. After the class has read them, begin your discussion with the questions copied earlier!

From glacier-covered mountains and temperate rainforest to rugged Pacific beaches, this National Parks Conservation Association page gives students a concise introduction to the remarkably varied ecosystems of Olympic National Park. The overview identifies the park's location in Washington, its 1938 establishment date, wildlife, waterfalls, Hoh Rainforest, coastline, and the restoration of the Elwha River following the removal of two large dams. It also reports current air-quality concerns and links to a substantial collection of NPCA articles, reports, conservation campaigns, personal park stories, and other resources on topics such as wildlife, climate change, natural sounds, park funding, and environmental protection. Because NPCA is a conservation advocacy organization, teachers can also use the page to help students distinguish factual park information from an organization's conservation perspective.

Social studies students and teachers will find this photo collection fascinating. The images document jobs and industries that no longer exist, but which were important in their day to keep the economy moving. The images date from around 1900 through the 1930s and 40s. Try this one to help answer the question, "What kind of jobs did people have back then?"
In the Classroom
Use the images on this site to create a "picture walk" in your classroom, introducing the topic of manual labor before the technological revolution after WWII. Select 10-15 of the more powerful and diverse images, hanging them up in different locations around your classroom. Have students rotate around the classroom every 30-45 seconds, jotting down what they observe and infer about each image until the entire class has completed the circuit. After the class is back in their seats, have small groups of students compare their observations and what it says about life during pre-modern technology. Then enter the group observations on Padlet, reviewed here. These could make great classroom decorations, and the lesson materials are thorough and grade-specific. Try this one on students interested in the physics of flight or a career in aviation.

In the Classroom
Beyond the obvious application for comparing treatment of news events around the country and the world, this site could also be used for writing, world language practice, a look at editorial choices, or other social studies applications. Include this resource in a media literacy unit on bias or during Newspapers in Education month. With elementary students, share many newspapers on a projector or interactive whiteboard as students identify the various elements of a newspaper article. The Lesson Plan link above contains and excellent poster link for familiarizing students with the elements that comprise the front page of a newspaper. Download it along with the lesson plan. The poster utilizes a sample front page from The Washington Post to illustrate how a front page is formatted. Have students analyze the sample front page by answering the suggested questions. Once students are familiar with the elements of a newspaper, extend their learning and challenge them to create their own class or school newspaper using Printing Press. If articles are too long for some readers, or if you are teaching summarizing skills consider using Skim.it, a Chrome extension that reduces articles into a 100-word summary.

This is a nicely done animated site about the history of Minnesota for elementary students. It concentrates on major industries of the state as the basis for a portrayal of life in Minnesota in the late 1800s. the illustrations and stories have a sort of "comic book" feel, but the information is well designed and well presented. Students in other states will find this a nice introduction to nineteenth century life on the prairie.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an introductor or activator on a lesson concerning Westward Expansion. Introduce the site on the Interactive whiteboard or projector, before allowing students to explore the site in pairs. Click Our Programs in the upper right corner to find he classroom section icalled Teach It, which ncludes lesson plans, as well as a series of very well done "journeys" that describe the industries and people that have had an effect on Connecticut history. The American Memory Collection at the Library of Congress does it again with this survey of the waves of immigration that have swept the American shores. While this site has a number of incomplete "exhibit" areas, the associated lesson plans are there, and well worth a look for those whose curricula include immigration. The site blends background information on the lives of literary figures with descriptions of the places they lived and visited, creating a nice context for a study of the factors that influence an author's work. While this site really assumes the reader knows the story of the women who helped ferry aircraft of all sorts from factory to front during World War II, the various site elements offer glimpses of the people, airplanes, and places that made the WASPs an indispensable element of the war effort. The sounds add some additional realism. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. There are a couple of audio files that use Flash, however there is a LOT more to see on this site.

Use the video on this site on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector to show students who the WASPS were as well as the contribution they made to the war effort. This would be a great addition to a lesson on WWII as well as the fight for equality between the sexes. Click on the Gallery and view Above and Beyond about the 38 WASPs who died during service to their country. The information here is very brief. You may want to ask small groups of students to select three of four WASPs to research and share their stories using a tool like Sway, reviewed here. While most of this site deals with visiting Versailles, students will find sections dealing with the King's daily routine and the life of the French court in the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, there are images of some of the more notable artwork, and of course, large sections available "seulement en Francais," which we hope will please the world language teachers. There's nothing like it elsewhere. There is an incredible amount of information to discover at this site by scrolling down the home page AND click on the Explore tab at the top of the home page. There are a few videos that are hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube they may not be viewable.
