This is an excellent site for any history, art history, or civics teacher attempting to put forth something more tangible for students to grasp. Click on "Images of the American Revolution," and open up the pictures on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Question students as to the meaning and context of the illustrations, to help them understand how images were used to convey certain meanings. Primary sources could be used to teach both the content and historical thinking skills in your classroom. Divide students into 5-6 groups, with each group assigned a different primary source to read and evaluate. (Sources should come from various perspectives to make the game more interesting) Have the groups present quick summaries of their source to the class, making sure to mention who the author is and whether or not there could be bias. After all have presented, have each team pick a representative to argue in front of the class as to why their source is the most reliable and valid. After reading a short folktale from Liberia or another country on the site, have students complete a 5-minute sketch of one scene using inspiration from Phillip Martin's clip art style. They can share their sketches in pairs and explain why they chose that moment. Let students select one of the included folktale play scripts (or adapt a story themselves) and perform it as a short reader's theater. They can design simple props or background art inspired by Martin's clip art. Display a world map and have students place markers on the countries where the folktales originate (e.g., Liberia, China, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil). Assign students to cooperative learning groups, with each group receiving a hypothetical amount of money, and directions to find lodging, food, transportation while surveying the sites of Paris. This is a great way to teach students how to budget with real world prices and figures. For an emphasis on French history, require students to participate in certain tourist activities in their hypothetical situation - simultaneously creating challenges to their budgets.
