Solar System Simulator - NASA
Grades
4 to 12tag(s): planets (124), solar system (125)
In the Classroom
Students use the simulator to explore different planets and moons. They create a travel brochure or postcard using Canva reviewed here for a chosen celestial body, describing its features, climate, and why someone might "visit." Students observe and compare planetary orbits in the simulator. They record differences in orbital speed, distance from the Sun, and revolution time, then discuss how these factors affect a planet's temperature and seasons. Using the simulator, students compare the sizes and distances of planets. They then create a scaled model using everyday objects (ex.: a basketball for Jupiter, a marble for Mercury) to represent the relative sizes and distances. Students design a space mission using the simulator. They pick a starting point (Earth, a spacecraft, or another planet) and determine the best route to another celestial body. They calculate travel time based on distances and research how NASA plans spaceflight routes.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
