Create collaborative mind maps (graphic organizers), concept maps, and Gantt charts using this online tool. See an example created by our editors. The example provides some ideas for using this online graphic organizer tool. Sign up with your email or download. The free version gives you 3 graphic organizers with sharing, publishing and collaboration.

tag(s): graphic organizers (57), mind map (33)

In the Classroom

Have students create graphic organizers in cooperative groups as a study guide for unit content, to collect information for a group research project, or show examples of an important concept. Share and compare the organizers on an interactive whiteboard or projector in class and allow classmates to suggest changes. Skills needed: join the site, practice with the tools (don't miss the notes feature!). Save up to 7 "private" maps and an unlimited number of "shared" maps.

Make a map available online by saving and clicking "yes" for sharing, then clicking the Save by URL icon. This will copy the URL onto your computer's clipboard so you can paste it into a word doc or even your teacher web page. Imagine sharing several student made "study guides" in the days before the unit test.

Note that maps that are shared can be seen by the public, but not altered. You specify members who may collaborate and make alterations. For students to collaborate using this tool they must have individual memberships, requiring an email account. These memberships must be activated from their email. So, if students do not have email that is accessible from school, classroom use BY STUDENTS will be severely limited. Editor's note: we asked the Mindomo folks about spell check and student safety issues. They are still developing this tool, so they MIGHT address these issues at a later date.

This oddly humorous website is all about the Octopus (cephalopods). There are articles about the octopus and other ocean animals, forums, features, videos and games. There is even an "octopodcast"! Some of the activities are more "fun" than "educational." But if you navigate through the website, you will find some great information and activities.

tag(s): marine biology (32)

In the Classroom

This website does provide some informative and humorous videos and games, be sure to view them prior to sharing them with your class. Some of the videos are not appropriate for younger audiences. The image galleries can provide some "real" examples of cephalopods for your budding marine biologists. Project them on an interactive whiteboard for students to label the parts!

The Air Quality Flag Program provides instructions for organizations to display colored flags daily that indicate the current air quality. Begin with "Start Your Flag Program" to find the four steps to get started. Although there is a link to purchase flags, participating programs can create their own flags using cloth or vinyl, or even a digital display on classroom whiteboards. Use the available link to create a custom widget for your class site. This site also includes lesson plans, activity books, and school resources.

Work together to create monthly air quality graphs using Data GIF Maker, reviewed here, then ask students to analyze the data. Consider asking students to create weekly podcasts that review the week's weather and air quality and include their predictions for the upcoming week. Adobe Podcast, reviewed here includes free tools for creating and sharing podcasts. As an alternative to a podcast for younger students, use Animate from Audio, reviewed here to create short animated films with students' voice recordings.

This website provides a lesson plan that was designed to use around Halloween. There are objectives, assessments, and standards provided. This lesson is all about throwing a "literary bash" in honor of your class's favorite piece of literature (Harry Potter is used an example). This activity is an excellent alternative to a traditional Halloween party.

Use this lesson plan, and tailor it to fit your unit in almost any content area - math, english, history, science, etc. Though this lesson was intended just for Language Arts classes, most content areas also have books or common themes that this could apply to. Use this lesson plan after a test or towards the end of the year when students might need a break from the traditional classroom routines. This is a great way to make sure students get some substance of a "break" while keeping it academic! Be sure to save this as a favorite on your classroom computer to allow for easy reference later on.
