At the site you can explore the various activities offered by the San Diego Natural History Museum. In the Canine Corner learn about domestic dogs and their cousins, learn little-known facts about canines, and read the glossary of canine terms. Learn about vision by exploring The Eyes Have It section, learn about dinosaurs in the Dinosaur Dig, and explore living light and bio luminescence in the Lights Alive section of the site. Some of the activities still require Flash, and the video section hasn't been updated. However, there is A LOT to learn from the other topics!

WiseMapping is a free online mind-mapping and graphic-organizer tool that allows users to create visual diagrams to organize ideas, plan projects, study concepts, and solve problems. Users can build concept maps, brainstorming webs, flowcharts, and task organizers using an easy drag-and-drop interface. Maps can include notes, links, images, and attached documents, making them useful for classroom instruction, collaborative planning, research projects, and personal organization. Finished maps can be shared by URL or embedded into websites and learning management systems, allowing students and teachers to collaborate and present ideas visually across a variety of subjects and grade levels.

In the Classroom
Users must be able to navigate the icons for editing and creating a mindmap. Icons and commands are the same as in any office and free applications that most people use. View the free demo for an introduction of using Wisemapping. Use the demo editor to play with the tools and learn what they do. Note: the demo function does not allow you to save your creation as it is a sandbox area for learning. Allow students an opportunity to learn to play first without teacher direction as each person will find different ways to use wisemapping for their best benefit. Click on a set of words to edit the words, color, font, etc. in the bubble. Drag items easily around the screen by clicking and dragging the icon to drop into a new configuration. Add "icons" and flags anywhere on your mindmap. Add a "note" to a bubble anywhere. The note appears like a little sticky note on the bubble and expands when clicked on. Add a "link" to any of the text on the wisemap that leads to any link on the web you specify. Export as a scalable vector graphic (svg), PDF document, or image file. "Share" to work collaboratively with others. Users must have a login in order to share and publish. Click on the "history" of a wisemap to view the contributions of others.Assign sections of current curriculum topic to groups of students to map out and explain in detail. Link to outside web pages and pictures and create notes with additional study hints and information. Assign a different group to review information for accuracy and add additional information and explanations. Using this process, a wisemap of a chapter or unit can be created easily and efficiently while benefiting all learners.
There are countless possibilities at this mental mapping site. Demonstrate the activity on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and then allow students to try to create their own graphic organizers. Use this site for literature activities, research projects, social studies, or science topics of study. Use this site to create family trees. Have students collaborate together (online) to create group mind maps or review charts before tests on a given topic. Have students organize any concepts you study; color-code concepts to show what they understand, wonder, question; map out a story, plotline, or LIFETIME; map out a step-by-step process (life cycle); map a real historical event as a choose-your-own-adventure with alternate endings based on pivotal points; plan a "tour" for a "thought museum." Use this mapping website as an alternative to a traditional test, quiz, or homework assignment in literature or social studies: have students demonstrate their understanding by completing a graphic organizer about the main points. Be sure that they RENAME it before they start work to an individual name so you know who did it (they could EMAIL it to you!) or have them print their results to turn in.

This site, created by the Kennedy Center, offers a wealth of interactive lesson plans for grades K-12 dealing with a variety of topics, all with an "arts" spin. Some examples of topics include Native Americans, Civil War, Shakespeare, myths, melodrama, adjectives, monsters, baseball, and countless others! Be sure to check out the category "Featured Resources" There are many interactive lessons: some with video, audio, or slideshows. The lessons provide an estimate of time required and complete, step-by-step instructions. There are printables included with some of the lessons.

Search this site for a topic that you are teaching in your class. Share the lesson on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Better yet, make the video or slideshow a learning station for students to watch in small groups. This site is so wonderful and HUGE, that after students are one with the resources you have for them, you may want to allow them to explore on independently or in small groups for a specific interest of theirs.

"Chalkbored" is an amazingly free resource for eleventh and twelfth grade chemistry classes. Lessons are organized into units such as Matter and Chemical Bonding, Chemical Reactions, and Hydrocarbons and Energy. There is an easy to follow key for what is offered with each lesson. PowerPoint presentations, printable worksheets, and accompanying experiments. This would be great for a beginner teacher of high school chemistry or for an experienced professional who would like to try out different things. Please be aware that this website is written by one author who has some strong beliefs about/against traditional education. However, the content of the website is far valuable and it certainly is worth taking a look.

This resource would be wonderful for an online chemistry course. The PowerPoint presentations could be uploaded and shared with students. The students could view them on their own time, taking time to properly digest the information. In a traditional classroom setting, pick and choose some presentations to share with your students. Try an associated lab in chemistry. The module is meant to make science easier on the paperwork end of things and more engaging with the hands-on activities.

This website offers a massive amount of information on volcanoes such as satellite images, current eruptions, a volcanic history calendar, earth volcanoes, other world volcanoes, eruption videos, observatory links, expedition journals and photos, and a large amount of factual information. The volcano games still require Java, but there is plenty of images and information to learn from here.

The site uses teen role models to show students how to eat nutritious foods, exercise, participate in sports, etc. in order to stay healthy. This site encourages preteens and young teems to stay active, achieve academically, and involve themselves in community projects. You can become a member of the Ask, Listen, Learn team with a simple registration (a parent's email address is required). The site uses those who've registered as their "superstars," those whose stories and life habits appear on the pages. The motto for the activities on these pages is "Say yes to a healthy lifestyle, and no to underage drinking." The site includes the "Ecochallenge" which helps students become more aware of their environment. The site was originally designed to help combat underage drinking and drunk driving. However, there are many other topics here to explore.

Create your own movies of the Sun or change the color of the images. Export your finished movies to view in a variety of formats. This open source downloaded program is virus/spam free and requires Java to operate.

Other timelines focus on scientists involved in disease prevention, and also timelines on how science interacted with disease to improve people's lifespans and lives. Related articles, activities, and great photos support the events of the timelines. Four lesson plans for teachers accompany features of each of the time lines.

Choose various parameters at the top of the periodic table to customize your view. Easily see the trends in the periodic table by selecting the appropriate parameter and watch the elements change color in proportion to the value. Use the Time Machine to determine the elements discovered (and not discovered) at that time. Drag the slider above the nonmetals to view their states of matter. View realtime data of 16 properties with a simple hover of the mouse. The slider also views subsets of data for even more information! View the orbitals of each element as well as all available isotopes. Choose Latin translations to understand the origin of the symbol of that element as well as direct information from Wikipedia. Can't find your element? Use the instant search on the site and the element will be highlighted. Use this unbelievable resource for finding information about the elements. Consider using the site to first understand periodic trends. Allow groups of students time to look at the elements and play with the controls. Encourage them to question why the numbers change and what the terms represent. Knowing the elements is more powerful when they are studying the trends in the periodic table. Report group findings to the class to understand how the periodic table is arranged and what elements have in common with one another. This is a wonderful resource to teach about the wealth of information compiled in the Periodic Table of Elements. I especially love that for each element it shows a revolving model of the orbitals, and the spins of the elements according to the electron configuration.Ana, , Grades: 6 - 12

This is a simple sub-page from Extreme Science. Learn factual information about the geological history of the Earth. On the right side of the page, there is a navigational list of topics that allows one to navigate between topics. The readings are relatively easy for early high school students and would make a nice alternative to textbook readings. The hotlinks to extra information on specific terms and concepts are a very helpful and convenient touch. Be aware: there are some advertisements. Advise students not to click on the ads.
