Though this page has been archived, and it is no longer updated, the links for the poems are still working. Poetry is a tough nut for the best of teachers. This British site offers engaging, highly visual presentations of poetry that will draw even the most poem-phobic students into the presentation. There are many options from which to choose, and the variety of presentation styles will help ensure that there is something for everyone. Language arts teachers will find this one well worth the effort. The audio requires Real Player, and a few activities require Shockwave.

SurLaLune Fairy Tales serves as an expansive digital library and research hub dedicated to the history and folklore of over 40 classic fairy tales. This free resource provides access to more than 1,500 illustrations and a database of thousands of folktales from across the globe, making it an ideal destination for students in grades 4-12. The site features unique annotated versions of popular stories like Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, where clicking on highlighted text reveals deep historical context, cultural significance, and thematic explanations. Beyond simple story text, the platform offers a "Similar Tales Across Cultures" section that links to variants from different countries, allowing for a comprehensive look at how narrative archetypes evolve.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site during a comparative literature unit to help students explore how a single story transforms across different cultures. Start by having students choose a well-known tale and use the site's annotations to identify recurring motifs or symbols. To engage students further, ask them to select two cultural variants of the same story--such as the Chinese and Egyptian versions of Cinderella--to compare character motivations and settings. Enhance the lesson by having students curate their findings and favorite illustrations into a Wakelet, reviewed here collection to share with the class. To extend the learning and apply their research, students can then design a modern "fractured" version of the tale using Canva for Education, reviewed here to create a digital storybook or infographic that blends traditional elements with a contemporary twist. This approach encourages critical thinking and provides a multifaceted look at global storytelling traditions.
