Brain Games offers a collection of over thirty interactive logic games, puzzles, music games, and more. Some specific topics include code breaking, coins, arithmetic, music notes, word scramble, and many others. There is even a card game version similar to "24." All of the activities require Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.
In the Classroom

This website is perfect for gifted students looking for an extra challenge. The various geometric solids include platonic solids, Archimedean solids, Kepler-Poinsot Polyhedra, and numerous others. The files are available in PDF format and require Adobe. In the Classroom
Why not print a pattern onto cardstock or other thick paper. Then project the image (that you printed for your students) onto a projection screen or interactive whiteboard, while students work independently at their seats. Before you pass out the paper copies, have them view the projected image and predict what it will be. These shapes can also serve as creative study aids for all subject areas, especially for students who need engaging ways to review. Have students write key terms and questions on the "faces" before assembling the figures, then "roll" them as a study game, testing each other to define or explain terms.

The activities are organized into categories by topic, starting with numbers and progressing to statistics and probability. In addition to selecting games by math concept, use the grade level links to choose games appropriate for first through sixth grade. Many, but not all, activities include correlations to Common Core Math Standards. Scroll to the bottom of the home page to find a series of video explanations of math topics. Teachers, also check out the teacher link for number lines, hundreds charts, pattern block activities, and more. If your district blocks YouTube, you may not be able to view the videos.

Although this website appears to offer a simple list of lesson plans, it is a "diamond in the rough." All of the lesson plans relate to the same standard, students will expand number sense to include integers and perform operations with whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals. Specific lesson plans include, "How Much is a Million," "Multiplication Strategy Review," "Partial Quotient," "Mixed Number/Improper Fraction Review," "Playground Measurement," and "Fraction Track."
All lesson plans are extremely detailed and provide standards, material lists, step-by-step instructions, interactive elements, links, printable pages, and more. Some of the links require JAVA. Get it from the Teachers First Toolbox page. All grade levels from K through Calculus available.

You can promote creativity and encourage 'thinking outside the box' through this site. Play the 'Which Came First' game at this site to see if you can guess which invention came first, especially in conjunction with a social studies class on the inventors and industrial revolution. (Warning: It's harder than you think!) Or you may opt to play the 'Invention Connection' game, a challenging activity that builds higher level thinking through attribute listing and looking for common characteristics of diverse inventions. Exercise your gray matter by solving one of the 12,000 'braingles' at this site. It purports to be the largest collection of puzzles, riddles, mind games, etc, on the Internet. Once you explore the site, you trust their word. The site is mobile phone and wii-friendly. Don't miss the section with SAT vocab (in Mentalrobics). There are articles on study skills and strategies such as clearing your mind before studying, "chunking" when reading, or various strategies to memorize material. Engage students into math and reading exercises through the endless riddles and puzzles at this site. They won't even be aware they are 'reading' or 'solving math.'

Registration is not necessary for reading the puzzles and clues. This site gives a lateral puzzle, and then the readers can ask questions to the original poster. Some of the "solved" puzzles could be used with younger students. However, the site is geared towards middle school and high school aged students.
