In the Classroom
Have students create graphic organizers in cooperative groups as a study guide for unit content, to collect information for a group research project, or show examples of an important concept. Share and compare the organizers on an interactive whiteboard or projector in class and allow classmates to suggest changes. Skills needed: join the site, practice with the tools (don't miss the notes feature!). Save up to 7 "private" maps and an unlimited number of "shared" maps.Make a map available online by saving and clicking "yes" for sharing, then clicking the Save by URL icon. This will copy the URL onto your computer's clipboard so you can paste it into a word doc or even your teacher web page. Imagine sharing several student made "study guides" in the days before the unit test.
Note that maps that are shared can be seen by the public, but not altered. You specify members who may collaborate and make alterations. For students to collaborate using this tool they must have individual memberships, requiring an email account. These memberships must be activated from their email. So, if students do not have email that is accessible from school, classroom use BY STUDENTS will be severely limited. Editor's note: we asked the Mindomo folks about spell check and student safety issues. They are still developing this tool, so they MIGHT address these issues at a later date.

If you are a booklover, this is a fabulous site and a unique way to connect with other booklovers around the world. The proviso with it is that it is an entirely open site. Watching the site for several years has proven that it is genuinely populated by people interested in reading and discussing books as well as sharing them with others throughout the world. Ron Hornbaker of Humankind Systems developed this software to make tracking books possible, and a phenomenon began that has grown immensely over the past 6 years. For everything you ever were curious about with the site, click on the FAQ at the bottom. An amazing site for anyone who reads and loves books.

Understanding that this is an open site worldwide is what puts it into the HS range-- plus the fact that most of the books addressed are adult books (rather than books written for juveniles). As a teacher, it is fascinating to gather information from other places-- and books are released from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and everywhere in between! There are sites on this web to look at the books and the people who release them. You must register to fully use the site, but it is free. This is definitely worth exploring for a variety of reasons, even beyond teaching reading and English. And if you are a book lover yourself, it is just plain fun! Explore Spanish colonial history and Florida's coastal ecosystems through the National Park Service's Fort Matanzas National Monument website. The site focuses on the fortified coquina watchtower completed in 1742 to protect the southern approach to Spanish St. Augustine, and introduces nearly 300 acres of dunes, salt marsh, maritime forest, beaches, plants, and wildlife. Teachers will find ready-to-go educational materials especially useful, including lesson plans, virtual experiences, field-trip resources, Junior Ranger activities, short videos, and distance-learning opportunities. Lessons connect history, primary-source analysis, science, climate change, and environmental studies, with materials available for learners from prekindergarten through high school. Some additional park videos link to YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, you may not be able to view the videos.

Invite students to complete an exit-ticket argument answering whether Fort Matanzas should be preserved and what responsibilities citizens have toward historic and natural resources. Use the NPS discussion questions as a starting point, then have students cite one historical and one environmental piece of evidence from the site. Have students compare Fort Matanzas with another colonial fort by sorting similarities and differences in purpose, materials, geography, and defensive design, then record their conclusions with 2 and 3 Interactive Venn Diagrams by Class Tools, reviewed here. This website organizes topics by general grade levels (K-5 and 6-12). To give you a taste of the uniqueness of these presentations, topics include Shakespeare, "grammar goofs," active reading strategies, a haunted house graphic organizer, the phonics millionaire game, pronouns, and more. Any language arts teacher is guaranteed to find something helpful at this website. Do yourself a favor and check it out! You may need PowerPoint software to view these files, depending on how the site creators save them. In the Classroom
You are limited only by your imagination in the use of this site with high school students. Assigning different "translations" would be the least of the activities. Connecting and writing or reporting on the many related sites can create endless projects from "Market Day" to storytelling to panel discussions to PowerPoint demonstrations.DO be aware that "Playing on my iPod" will take students to other students' sites, so you might want to limit and be specific about what you want them to do; checking that first yourself may show that your school's filtering blocks those sites anyway. There is also a link to buy shirts from zazzle.com featuring Chaucer-related sayings; again, your filtering may block this, or you might want to address that issue specifically. In any case, there is too much "good stuff" here not to use at least some of it for fun and learning if you teach Chaucer et. al. Teachers of gifted students may find this site a marvelous prototype for creating a similar author-centered blog or wiki.

It begins with a clickable timeline and covers eight periods of his life, culminating in his last days. What is terrific about this site is its interactive capability-- so you can introduce it on a projector or whiteboard at the beginning of class, then let them continue by themselves as you go around and check on individual issues. After each section there is a "review quiz" that students can take right there and get their score immediately. This site developed from the Yale-New Haven Teachers' Institute offers some tried and true as well as new ways to get children writing painlessly. It walks a teacher through rationale and procedures and offers lessons for different lengths of writing, etc. Guidone offers some creative ways to get kids writing, especially reluctant learners who might need a little prodding of the imagination! While you may be familiar with some of the methods, his combinations can be surprising and thought-provoking. Definitely worth a look, despite the simple, text-only appearance of the page.

For those who just can't wait for the next Harry Potter book, this site offers plenty of Harry Potter news, discussions, galleries with possible title pages and other illustrations, a page of avatar graphics, links to Potter movie trailers, and anything imaginable to do with the books and/or the movies. This is a consumer site, so it is a bit more "Hollywood" than "education," but there are portions that promote discussion, character analysis, and pure love of reading.

Encourage your writers to create and publish web-based writing with the help of this site! The site offers opportunities for kids to do creative writing on their own, read what others have done internationally, find writing suggestions from experts, and create online writing projects. In one section, they can write original "spells" a la Harry Potter. All writing submitted is carefully screened for this safe site. Be sure to check out Adventure Island (click on Writing with a Difference), a place for your students to create their own online story where readers navigate, read descriptions, and make choices. A few activities require Flash, but there is a lot to discover on this site that does not.

Select a theme you are studying in science or social studies or a setting from a literature piece you have studied, and make an Adventure Island as a group project. You must register(free), but the process is simple. The teacher informaiton is thorough and helpful. Check out some of the examples first.
