The MBGnet Freshwater Biomes website provides an overview of freshwater ecosystems, including lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and wetlands. Through student-friendly text, illustrations, and interactive links, students learn about the characteristics of freshwater habitats, the plants and animals that live there, food webs, adaptations, biodiversity, and the importance of water resources. The site also explores environmental issues and conservation efforts, helping students understand how freshwater ecosystems support life and why they need protection. This resource is valuable for teaching ecology, life science, environmental science, and habitats in upper-elementary and middle-school classrooms. This site is one of the web resources for the TeachersFirst interactive Biomes of the World Unit.

In the Classroom

Try the TeachersFirst interactive Biomes of the World Unit to get your students involved and engaged with their own research. Have students explore the different freshwater habitats featured on the site, such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and wetlands. Students can create a chart identifying key characteristics, plants, and animals found in each ecosystem. Have students investigate threats to freshwater ecosystems, such as pollution, invasive species, or habitat loss. They can create posters, brochures, or public service announcements using Adobe Express for Education reviewed here encouraging others to protect local water resources.

The MBGnet Rivers and Streams website introduces students to freshwater river ecosystems and explains how moving water shapes habitats for plants and animals. Through clear explanations, illustrations, and educational resources, students learn about river zones, food webs, aquatic organisms, water flow, and the interactions between living and nonliving components of the ecosystem. The site also explores environmental concepts such as adaptation, biodiversity, and conservation, helping students understand the importance of protecting freshwater resources. This resource is valuable for life science, ecology, environmental science, and watershed studies in elementary and middle school classrooms.

In the Classroom

Have students trace the path of a river from its source to its mouth using information from the website. Students can create a map using Google My Maps, reviewed here showing key features such as tributaries, rapids, floodplains, and deltas, then explain how the river changes along its course. Students use the site to identify producers, consumers, and decomposers found in river ecosystems. They can create a food web diagram with Whimsical Mind Maps, reviewed here and discuss how energy moves through the ecosystem and how changes to one species might affect others. Assign students a river organism from the website. Have students research and present how its physical and behavioral adaptations help it survive in fast-moving or slow-moving water environments.

The MBGnet Ponds and Lakes website introduces students to freshwater lake ecosystems and the plants, animals, and environmental conditions that make them unique. Through easy-to-read explanations, illustrations, and interactive links, students learn about lake habitats, food chains, aquatic organisms, and the relationships between living and nonliving components of freshwater ecosystems. The site also explores ecological concepts such as adaptation, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship, making it a useful resource for life science, ecology, and environmental science lessons in both elementary and middle school classrooms.

In the Classroom

Have students explore the diagrams and information on the site to identify the plants, animals, and nonliving factors found in a lake ecosystem. Students can create a labeled sketch of a pond or lake habitat and discuss how organisms depend on one another. Students can use information from the website to build a food web showing producers, consumers, and decomposers in a lake ecosystem. They can use arrows to demonstrate the flow of energy and explain what might happen if one organism were removed. Have students compare lakes and ponds to other aquatic ecosystems, such as rivers, streams, wetlands, or oceans. They can create a chart highlighting differences in water movement, organisms, habitats, and environmental conditions.

The American Physical Society (APS) Learning Resources collection provides educators with a wide range of free physics and STEM teaching materials designed to support science instruction from elementary school through college. The site features lesson plans, classroom activities, experiments, videos, articles, career resources, and professional learning opportunities that help students explore topics such as motion, energy, space science, engineering, and modern physics. Resources are searchable by grade level and subject area, making it easy for teachers to find materials that align with their curriculum. Whether introducing fundamental science concepts or extending student learning through hands-on investigations, APS offers high-quality, research-based resources that promote scientific inquiry and critical thinking.

After exploring an APS lesson on forces or motion, have students design and build a simple device, such as a paper roller coaster, a balloon-powered car, or a marble run. Students can test variables, collect data, and explain the physics behind their results. Have students watch an APS video or read an article about a current scientific discovery. Students can summarize the findings, identify the scientific questions being investigated, and discuss how evidence supports the conclusions. Students can work in teams to create a model exhibit that teaches visitors about a physics concept such as energy, magnetism, light, or motion. Exhibits may include demonstrations, diagrams, hands-on components, and informational displays to teach others about the topic.
