Introduce your students to the inspiring life of Jovita Idar, a pioneering Mexican American journalist, teacher, nurse, and civil rights activist from Laredo, Texas, who used her voice and actions to combat racism, advocate for women's rights, and promote education. She wrote for her family's newspaper, La Cronica, and later founded the League of Mexican Women (La Liga Femenil Mexicanista) to provide free education to Mexican-American children. Notably, she stood up to the Texas Rangers when they attempted to shut down the newspaper El Progreso after it published an editorial critical of U.S. military actions. The site includes a short animated documentary detailing Idar's journey, along with free, standards-aligned lesson plans and a Do-It-Yourself Screening Kit to facilitate classroom discussions and activities.

Introduce your students to the remarkable life of Dr. Margaret Chung, the first American-born Chinese woman to become a physician. Graduating from the University of Southern California Medical School in 1916, Dr. Chung overcame significant racial and gender barriers to establish a successful medical career. She founded one of the first Western medical clinics in San Francisco's Chinatown and became affectionately known as "Mom Chung" to over 1,500 servicemen during World War II, whom she supported through mentorship and care. Dr. Chung also played a pivotal role in advocating for the creation of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), the women's branch of the U.S. Naval Reserve. This resource includes a 10-minute PBS video, a comprehensive biography, and a timeline of her achievements.

This website showcases young activist Marley Dias' who started #1000BlackGirlBooks, a project to collect books with Black girl heroes. On her site, you can learn about her book drives and her own book, "Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!" There's also a blog where Marley talks about why it's important to have diverse books and how everyone can help make a change. Plus, there are tips for teachers and parents finding and using books that show different kinds of people.

Use a program like Book Creator, reviewed here where students can create their own digital book that showcases a diverse figure. Students can then share their digital books with classmates and discuss the importance of seeing diverse literary characters. Gravity is a video response tool to promote asynchronous classroom discussions. Include this site with your other resources when teaching about women as changemakers or after reading a biography of Florence Nightingale. Introduce Florence Nightingale to students by creating a timeline of her life using MyLens, reviewed here or by having an online "chat" with Florence Nightingale using Character.ai, reviewed here. This lesson includes seven tasks that explore a different primary source document; divide students into seven groups to each complete a task, then share their discoveries through class presentations. For example, use Google Slides, reviewed here to create a collaborative presentation by adding each task to a different slide. Ask each group to use their slide to respond to the exploration questions provided in their task and share their responses with the class. As a final assessment, use the Choice Board Creation tool found at MagicSchool.ai, reviewed here to find suggestions to include in choice board activities, such as creating a travel brochure from Florence's hometown, writing a news article about Florence, or designing an infographic that presents key facts on Florence Nightingale's life.

This site brings together many of the excellent resources on the web about Judy Huemann and the disability movement. Find podcasts with disabled changemakers and their supporters. Resources offer a variety of information, lessons, videos, books and book guides, disability resources for asserting your rights, and much more. Central to the disability rights movement is Section 504 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which stipulates that individuals with disabilities "should not be denied the benefit of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." Find a downloadable "Curriculum Guide for Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights," found under 504 Sit in History. Judy Huemann led protests, including a 26-day sit-in at Health Education and Welfare's San Francisco headquarters, calling the federal government to issue regulations implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Include this site with other resources featuring women role models, biographical topics, and career exploration information. Since this website has extensive information from around the web, consider using a curation tool such as Padlet, reviewed here, as a resource to share information and sources with students. While "Patient No More" is for high school and beyond, there are parts that can be pulled out for your elementary students. For instance, there are videos you can use with Edpuzzle, reviewed here, to add comments and discussion questions for younger students. In addition, there is an observation chart where students wander around their environment, recording where there are examples of accessibility or a lack of accessibility.

The Story of Anne Frank is an online opportunity for students to envision what actually happened during Anne Frank's childhood, particularly while she was in hiding in the Secret Annex at 265 Prinsengracht, Amsterdam. Thanks to this site, students are able to feel personally involved in what occurred at this location to a thirteen year old girl during the Holocaust. Her story is conveyed through authentic photographs and documents from the Anne Frank House, the former hiding place where Anne Frank's original first diary is on display.

This is a great site to add to your class web page during your study of Anne Frank and the Holocaust, or as part of the themes of discrimination and resiliency. Use it as an introduction before reading The Diary of Anne Frank by displaying the website on your interactive whiteboard or projector to spark a whole class investigation of Anne Frank's childhood and family, her teenage years in hiding and the people who helped, the betrayal, the captivity and suffering in the concentration camps, and her diary. Students may continue exploring and learning on their own in the computer lab or with a class set of laptops. You can easily develop a checklist to direct students to the links that you want to emphasize and to keep them on task while navigating the site. There are even online multiple-choice quizzes about Anne Frank and her diary. Consider having cooperative learning groups create multimedia presentations about Anne Frank. How about online books using a site such as Bookemon, reviewed here.
