Black History (or African-American History) Month is a celebration of achievements by African Americans observed during the month of February each year. Leverage our timely Black History resource collections to help students recognize the central role of blacks in U.S. history.

Civil Rights Movement

Virtual Learning Journey: Civil Rights Movement

Take your students back in time. Listen to firsthand accounts, watch 14 videos, and explore primary source documents found along the way. The site includes seven themes and topics based on the Civil Rights Movement and extension activities.

Civil Rights History Project

View personal stories of Civil Rights activists from the 1950's -1960's through video interviews. Each interview features a written transcript for download. Interviewees are members of The Freedom Movement and discuss their early life and role.

These sites offer numerous project options, including the ability to present information about a famous person or important event. Use these resources to create a digital story, timeline, or interactive branching tree.

Grades 6-12

Apester

Create free online storytelling tools. Use the site's templates to add or change images, text, and other options. When finished, publish then share via the link created. Add polls, quizzes, stories, and see the number of views and times shared.

eStory Timeline Creator

Try your hand at this timeline creation tool and its image and media links features. Follow the prompts to add each event including dates, descriptions, and more. After adding the information, save and submit to create your timeline.

Grades 7-12

PeoplePlotr

Create interactive family trees or hierarchy representations using drag and drop features. You also can embed images, videos, and texts within plots. Additional options include adding and viewing information in a timeline format.
