The decades-long battle for women's suffrage and the Civil Rights movement were both pivotal chapters in the broader struggle to extend equal rights to all Americans. Trailblazers like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Ida B. Wells traveled tirelessly, enduring harassment and jail to demand the ballot for women. Countless women played indispensable roles in fueling and sustaining the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Through her unshakable advocacy of nonviolent resistance, Diane Nash helped desegregate lunch counters and public spaces across the South. The National Women's History Museum site includes a rich collection of resources. Although the collection is certainly deep on issues related to women's suffrage, there is also information on women in World War II, women and education, women and the Progressive movement, and women spies. There are good photographs of artifacts from the women's movement, and a nice collection of lesson plans, grouped by grade level.

In the Classroom
Of course, the site would be useful to students doing research on the women's movement in general, or on the role of women during several important historical eras. In the "educational resources" section, there is a collection of quotations from women that would be great for creating displays for women's history month. Challenge students to create a poster for one of the women quoted using a tool such as Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here. There is also a group of quizzes that could be adapted for classroom use. The section focused on the women of Jamestown includes the stories of Native American women as well as the role of early European settler women and could supplement the usual Thanksgiving lessons on the new American colonies. As a class activity, or in small groups, brainstorm a list of modern women, not included on this site, for a future nomination. In the Classroom
This site has plenty of relatively short videos that could easily be played in class to supplement lecture. For a unit on WWII, play the short 3 minute video about the Women Auxiliary Corp on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Short and sweet, the video addresses what the domestic front was like and addresses the issues of women's rights simultaneously. Have students watch the video, and then hold a class discussion as to the differences seen in the WAC video and videos that they might have seen concerning the mens army. After the discussion, have students create venn diagrams highlighting the differences. The rest of this page displays 225 artworks that, when clicked, give you information about the artwork and the artist. When you click Artists, you'll find photos and profiles of women artists. Search by time periods and or medium. This page displays photos of the artists, and there is an interactive button at the top where you can shuffle which artists are displayed. Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector). Take advantage of the free art lessons then allow students to explore on their own or in collaborative groups. Since many of the lessons include writing, enhance learning by having students create online posters individually or together as a class. Use a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here, to display a photo of the artwork or artist and explain what they learned.
