Budd:e is an engaging learning experience that offers interactives to play for points, while teaching important cybersecurity and safety behaviors. The site keeps your interest through the building of a personalized robot or cyborg. Cybersecurity and safety topics covered in the package include advice on malware, securing personal information online and tips for safe social networking. Choose from primary or secondary activities based on age range, then begin. A demo is available to try without sign-in; however, registration is required to fully use resources on the site such as saving and resuming previous activities. Teachers will find a vast library of resources such as lesson plans, video explanations of the online activities, and Australian curriculum maps. This site was created in Australia, so American English speakers may notice some slight differences in vocabulary and/or spelling.

Have a library for every class, assignment, every year, or yearbooks. In lower grades, set up a teacher account for the whole class. This education friendly tool avoids some of the "public interaction" that can offer inappropriate content. Upgrade to more advanced features, to include more options. The additional information on blogging makes this site very valuable even if you already have a blogging platform. Find a plethora of advice, tutorials, pdfs, and lesson plans for blogging. This site is a great reference site for all who are beginning to use blogs, or even look for more varied and effective ways to log with students, or even other classes. Compare this tool to other free blogging tools mentioned in TeachersFirst's Blog Basics for the Classroom .

View results easily, read comments, or submit your own comment by including your name, email (will not be displayed), and comment. At the time of this review, we found no evidence of inappropriate public comments (and we looked hard!) , but you might want to preview before turning young people loose on the site.

Display a Thunk on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) as a discussion/debate starter. Have students choose a response and defend their answer. Allow students to discuss their answer throughout the week and survey responses again. Have students create their own Thunks to be discussed in class. Create a bulletin board and allow students to post comments and reactions to the question posed. Use a Thunk as a journal writing prompt. If you are looking for a clearinghouse that offers free inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, this ever-evolving site is perfect for engaging your students with digital videos of the global issues facing our world today. Use your projector or interactive whiteboard to project videos. Watch your students' enthusiastic reactions in science, social studies, or English classrooms as they view a TED video and then follow-up with a debate on the future or the impact of technology on society, or use them as a springboard for interesting writing prompts or to spark a discussion connected with a unit of study. Challenge students to do a compare/contrast activity using an online Venn Diagram tool (reviewed here). Most of the videos are less than twenty minutes, which makes it real doable to embed in a one-period class lesson.

MinyanLand is a virtual community designed to engage you with games and interaction that help you understand about money. The economic system of MinyanLand mimics the real-life pricing of general goods and services. As you participate in the system, your actions will affect the overall MinyanLand economy. To keep the economy stabilized, for instance, you must stay healthy by eating on a regular basis. MinyanLand will also offer incentives to encourage such behavior as charitable giving. You start the activity with $50,000 and a condo. You earn money by doing chores, jobs, and playing games. Games test knowledge of money and include titles such as "Paper Route" and "Where Did You Get That Money?" Spend money to buy things for your home, add rooms, or move into a new neighborhood. Registration requires an email address; however, one benefit of registering is that students can earn money by completing chores assigned by the classroom teacher who registered them.

In the Classroom
MinyanLand would be great as a year-long project. Students can visit MinyanLand throughout the year in the classroom (and at home) to learn about money, investing, spending, earning, and the economy. It is a natural fit in the math classroom where students are already working with money and numbers. MinyanLand would be best in a lab or laptop cart setting where each student has access to a computer. If you don't have a lab for students, use classroom computers as a learning center. Students can take turns at the center throughout the week to interact in MinyanLand. Tips: Even if you don't want to use the virtual money in class, consider letting parents know about the opportunity to tie household chores to learning. Students can play in class and earn virtual money at home.

Find lesson plans, ideas, activities, materials, and resources for using the whacky, whimsical, words of Seuss in this collection of links to many places on the web. The mere mention of the name Dr. Seuss has become synonymous with kindergarten nursery rhymes, but even he would be pleased and amazed to see how useful and diversified his books are for not only teaching reading skills, but also for use in science to help students understand contemporary concepts like going green, or in social studies classes to teach World War II political cartoons, or in elementary math classes to learn basic operations. Click on the well-known book titles for creative ways to discuss, analyze, compare, contrast, sequence, write, resolve conflicts, recycle, and examine important concepts. Of course, there is also plenty of phonics, word play, and building comprehension activities for the language arts teachers who have always been loyal fans. Note: some of the links are no longer active, but the collection still has enough working to make it worthwhile.

If there was anything that Dr. Seuss wanted us to learn in his later years that you won't find in Oh, the Places You'll Go, you'll not only discover just about everything else here, you will also find out how to do it. Compare the works of Seuss and Silverstein by having students work in groups to prepare critical thinking questions about issues of friendship or making wise choices, exploring the relationship between sound and spelling using onomatopoeia in a standards-based lesson from Mr. Brown Can MOO! Can You?, reading Trees for Many Reasons to examine the importance of conserving natural resources, or introducing One Fish, Two Fish as a way to demonstrate Venn Diagrams with Teachersfirst Venn Diagram tool (reviewed here), you'll add humor that will liven up instruction. Permission is granted to link to any educational site, so feel free to post your favorite Seuss games and activities on your class page.

Students learn through practice and discussion of real and imaginary situations. Each activity includes objectives, a time frame, background information, links to corresponding web activities, and worksheets. This is a meaningful, double-purpose way to model and practice good listening skills, while students become aware and improve communications skills that affect relationships with their peers.

Start by clicking on the Teacher's Guide to explore the introduction, activities, and resources. Caution: Do not start by clicking on the link Click here to begin. This takes you to a video that you may choose to use later, but is appropriate for third grade level. Use the materials in their ready-to-go format or adapt them to meet your objectives. Many of the activities may be started as a whole class lesson by displaying them on the whiteboard and then follow through by having students working in groups and sharing their results. This is an excellent opportunity to group students together who do not usually choose to work with each other. Therefore, it might set the stage at the beginning of the school year for setting up cooperative groups.

One selection is available in pdf book form, and offers crayon colored drawings to go with the complete story of one child's experiences. Other offerings include poems, drawings, cartoons, and short essays, and FAQ information about stuttering. Students of any age are welcome to contribute here. Offerings are written in English and French.

In the Classroom
Share these stories during an anti-bullying lesson. Talk about how you would feel if you stuttered or were bullied for another reason. Make a list of ways to react to bullies. Encourage students to add their own experiences to this site, if appropriate permissible under school policies (check with your administrator). Get parent permission before posting any student work on this sharing site.

Consider using this program for group of the week. Award points for positive behaviors such as participation, helping others, creativity, hard work, or create your own categories. Using ClassDojo for group behaviors will give immediate feedback to students if projected on your whiteboard or your projector.Are you a regular education teacher with special education students mainstreamed into your classroom? Use Class Dojo to privately keep track of student behaviors and send a report to special education teachers or parents. This could be invaluable to a life skills, autistic support, or emotional support teacher who needs to track the behavior of each of the students as part of an IEP. Alternative ed programs may find this tool very useful, as well, even up through high school.

This award-winning site contains both original and classic short stories and children's tales in audio form. On the left sidebar you can choose the genre. Each selection has a brief summary on the opening page, so you can decide whichever story appeals to you. In addition to the mostly shorter selections, there is a fairly extensive list of stories that are around 10 minutes in length. Some stories are audio only (no text). You do NOT need to pay to simply listen from the website. Click the "play" button to play. Downloads cost money.

In the Classroom
Have students try out this site with headphones on individual computers. Turn up your speakers and share this on your projector or interactive whiteboard as a listening activity. Use this site as extra listening practice for ELL/ESL students or any class. Create some reading/listening comprehension questions for students. Or better yet, have cooperative learning groups listen to DIFFERENT short stories and create 3-4 comprehension questions. Then have students rotate stories and try out the comprehension questions created by their classmates. Since nearly all stories are audio only, this site is excellent for listening practice. If you have print versions of these classics, be sure to have them handy at a listening center for beginning readers to follow along.

Use as a daily writing prompt to encourage students to develop critical thinking skills and synthesize how this might apply to their lives. Use as connections to literature and make comparisons. Explore the historical impact of the quotes in current events. Challenge gifted and advanced classes to discover how the quotes can help provide answers for pressing life decisions. Use the quotes for students to create posters or bulletin boards. Make the projects even more "high-tech" by creating electronic posters using a site such as Wallwisher, (reviewed here). Challenge students to create virtual word clouds using Wordle, (reviewed here). Students can create their own quotes to make a class quote collection book. Use as a basis for studying themes and values that guide characters in literature and writing. Send inspirational quotes and personalized messages to each student. Never be without words of wisdom! Whether you have a favorite professor or elementary teacher, here is a way to thank them publicly. It's very simple. There is no registration. Click on "Submit a Story" to fill in the teacher name, what you are thanking him/her for, and other details. You can include your Twitter picture. You can even email the letter to the teacher. Read the letters posted by others. This site could be used for thanking a favorite past teacher, or anyone affiliated with a school. There is a multitude of people who work in schools and are kind to children.

What a nice way to teach letter writing! Teach your students how to write a friendly letter for an authentic audience. Have them put their final copy on Thanks for Teaching Us. In lower grades, work together to write letters to "community helpers" in your school. What about that favorite coach? The custodian who got the ball off the roof? The lunch lady who gave your student a lunch even though his/her account had no funds? The principal? Counselors? Avoid having students identify themselves on the Internet. This readaloud collection is part of theHelp I lost my library/media specialist series. Although nothing can replace the specialized knowledge of a teacher-librarian, this collection of books and activities was created by an experienced elementary library/media specialist. The list of books to read aloud and accompanying activities center on the character traits we typically associate with the holiday season and try to instill: generosity, benevolence, philanthropy, compassion, service, and kindness. If your library does not have the books you want from this list, try using the ISBN numbers to borrow them on interlibrary loan from a public library nearby.
