This new site focuses on the Negro Baseball Leagues from their beginnings in the late 19th century until the time that Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Much of the content is the work of James A. Riley, one of the foremost experts in the study of the Negro Leagues. The site includes information on players, teams, video clips, resources and current issues. Only a few items still require Flash. The other information and videos don't, and are well worth your visit. The videos reside on YouTube. If your district or school blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Use the site as a resource during Black History Month for students who are researching the Negro Baseball Leagues, or players who were part of the leagues. Tie together current events (during baseball season) with this historical site. Have cooperative learning groups create venn diagrams using an online tool such as the Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here to compare the Negro Baseball Leagues to the baseball teams of today. What was the same, what is different? The site might also be useful in discussions of the Civil Rights movement or as a part of a look at segregation in the early 20th century. Check back frequently, as the site is clearly expanding and will have more information in the future.

This WebQuest, based on The Brooklyn Nine: A Novel in Nine Innings, begins in a similar fashion as opening a box of 1845 to 2002 baseball memorabilia. Every chapter, or "inning," is a snapshot of American history as seen through one of our national pastimes-baseball. Although the book is fictional, many of the people, places, and events are based on facts. There are stories to read and research to explore about the history behind the people, places, and events. Each task leads up to collecting "souvenirs" along the way that students use to design their own digital box of memorabilia. Students finish by writing the stories that go along with their collection. What a great motivational hook for teaching information literacy, with all the steps built right in, including easy-to-follow directions and descriptions of the task, the process, the web based research, and creative extension activities. There is even a rubric to use for holistic evaluation.

In the Classroom

September and October are perfect months for baseball fever, with the World Series right around the corner, so why not get on base with The Brooklyn Nine: A Novel in Nine Innings and make a double play by introducing your class to the historical fiction genre. Divide your students into teams of two or three players to complete this WebQuest over the course of several days, using a class set of computers for a "home game" or take them to the computer lab for an "away game." There are many projects to choose from; assign all of them, select just a few, or have different teams be responsible for various activities. One of the tasks involves students creating an information web, using Inspiration software. If your school does not have a license for that software or it is not already downloaded on your school's computers, you can use free web-based alternatives, such as bubble.us reviewed here or one of the many tools available from Teachersfirst toolbox. Even if you do not have time to do the entire WebQuest, the links provide valuable background information for shorter investigations.

Whether you are a lover of major league baseball or have a "soft spot" for overcoming the odds stacked against you and achieving a dream - the American dream, you will find videos and activities on this Web site that will surely capture your heart and the hearts and attention of the boys as well as the girls in your class.

Every year, people across the country pause on April 15 to celebrate the historic event that marks the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball in 1947. Use this educational unit (in PDf format) to bring the significance of Jackie Robinson's legacy to your classrooms. Although Breaking Barriers centers around an essay contest, you may choose to simply use the ideas to offer and assist your students in learning opportunities to teach them values that will enable them to face their own barriers and express themselves in written form. There are lessons, printables, book lists, videos, and more that align with language arts, math, and social studies national standards. The link to the videos is at the top of the second page.

In the Classroom

Share the video of Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson, on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Listen to her personal story of her famous baseball player Dad's courage, determination, integrity, and persistence to break the color barrier on and off the playing field. Use an online tool like bubble.us, reviewed here, to replace paper and pencil and engage students in whole class brainstorming of some of the real life barriers that students face today, and then lead into a blog writing activity for students to think about how to use Jackie Robinson's values to face and overcome barriers in their own lives. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, again, exchange paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Site123, reviewed here. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, again, change out paper and pencil and challenge your students to create a blog using Edublog, reviewed here. Whether you are celebrating the anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day, Black History month, a unit on courage and heroes, or introducing these concepts anytime during the year, the downloadable and whiteboard ready materials will increase the richness of your class discussions and broaden students' understanding of how to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

In the Classroom

Use the information at this website in math or history class. This is great supplemental material for statistics, U.S. history (since 1880s), African-American history, and others. Have students use this site for individual research projects about topics provided at this website. Use the "Stathead" information as an anticipatory set for a math or statistics lesson.
